Can I use a 5 Gal Bucket from the local hardware store to ferment my beer or to add the suger to prime it before bottleing. Must I buy a pale from a homebrew store that is food grade. What does good grade really mean anyway. Also would you leave your favorite suppy website.

Yes, you can use the hardware store 5 gallon buckets. If you look at the bottom, it's made of the same material as the food grade buckets at the brew store (HDPE-High Density PolyEthylene) While it's not specifically 'labeled' food grade, the criteria to be food grade is to be manufactured of virgin materials (not recycled). The buckets you get at the hardware store are made of virgin materials. If there is ever any question, the manufacturer's name is on the bucket and you can contact them and verify (if you're motivated enough...I'm not).

Yes, if you are in a pinch, you can use a regular five gallon bucket, as long as it's new and has no scratches or deflections in it (where bacteria can hide). (or as long as it didn't at one time contain spackle or any caustic chemicals. make sure you sanitize thoroughly regardless of whatever you use. best to use is a glass carboy. worth the investment, for both cleaning and sealing with an airlock.

Use only a food grade bucket. Non-food grade ones are often treated and you can't guarantee getting the chemicals out of it. Your best bet is to buy a homebrewing kit from a homebrew supply store. Visit maltose.com to see a good starter kit.
