Using a fermentation lock ?

Question: Using a fermentation lock ?

(Posted by: redundant redhead on 2008-11-11 23:57:26)

I am going to ferment sugar with yeast and I am interested in using a fermentation lock - is there something that I can use around the house that would allow the CO2 to be released but prevent air from entering the fermentation vessel?

Just sugar and yeast? I'll bet you were planning on using baker's yeast, too. If you are going to go to all the trouble of fermenting, you may as well make something worth drinking. There are two ways to start. The way I think you might like best is to pick up First Steps in Winemaking, by C.J.J. Berry and let him guide you through the steps. The other way is to find a local home-brew shop and explain that you want to get into home-vinting. That's a bit more expensive but you have a good source of advice when you need it. If you insist on making prison-hooch, just slip a condom over the mouth of the bottle.

I'm sure you won't find something like this around the house, but what you need is an airlock (link goes to a place where you can buy one online). You can also find these at a brewer's supply store.

A balloon works in a pinch, but you are better of going to a brewer supply store.
