Posted by: MEE on 2010-01-01, 11:28:25 If its an aerated fermenter (which it usually is for alcohol and beverages) then aeration would cause an increase in volume after fermentation has started. Also, if it is a fed batch fermentation, extra nutrients and antifoam may be added once the production rate hits a specific value mid-fermentation. Extra volume may be needed during batch fermentations if gas produced from the reaction is not released. |

The volume of the fermenter, is the working volume, not the full capacity of the container. Think about it for a moment.. Would you fill to the brim? .Why? Why not? |

Posted by: bigralso on 2010-01-01, 12:39:53 At the start of the fermentation process , a lot of foam is produced, therefore you need room in the fermenter to hold it or you will have one big mess to clean up. |
